Dr. Marcus Greene thought he understood surprises. He had stitched wounds, delivered calves, and stood with families as pets slipped away. Still, nothing in his years behind clinic doors prepared him for Lola, a pregnant chocolate Labrador who waddled inside cheerful and trusting, unaware her puppies would shift everything.
He greeted the owner, Mrs. Thompson, and reached for Lola. The woman kept one arm wrapped tightly around the dog, fingers pressing into fur.
