JOHN AMOS – BORN IN 1939
Before captivating audiences, John Amos played college football and even had a brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs! But acting was his true calling. In 1970, he landed a role on the iconic “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” becoming one of the first Black main cast members on a major sitcom.
John’s defining role came in 1977, bringing the powerful Kunta Kinte to life in the groundbreaking miniseries “Roots,” earning an Emmy nomination for his unforgettable performance. He also starred in films like “Coming to America” and “Die Hard 2,” showcasing his versatility. He also returned to TV with acclaimed roles on “The West Wing” and “The District.”
