Studio 54’s Secret Album: 30 Rare Photos from Disco’s Golden Age

Tod Papageorge’s Photography Special

Tod Papageorge, a celebrated American photographer, perfectly captured the essence of Studio 54 in the late 1970s, a time when the nightclub reigned as New York’s epicenter of decadence, glamor, and cool. Gaining access to this dazzling world in late 1977, shortly after its sensational opening, he embarked on a journey to document the beautiful and the debauched within its walls.

His collection, aptly named “Studio 54,” comprises 66 documentary photographs, with 54 notably taken in 1978, using medium-format cameras. These images, beyond mere snapshots, are vignettes of the club’s electric atmosphere, capturing moments like a clubgoer pausing amidst a night of relentless dancing.
