The Rollercoaster Life of Matthew Perry: Fame, Struggle, and Resilience
A Near-Death Experience
In his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Awful Thing,” Matthew shared a harrowing account of how he nearly lost his life at 49. He suffered an opioid overdose that affected his colon, a much more severe condition than what was initially reported. He endured two weeks in a coma and five months in the hospital.
During his recovery, Matthew revealed that doctors gave him only a two percent chance of survival, and he was hooked to an ECMO machine to assist his breathing and heart function. Recalling advice from his therapist about OxyContin abuse, Matthew found the motivation to abstain from the drug and focus on his recovery.
